Managing bull elephants
in unprotected Contact:
A case study to improve elephant welfare and mahout safety.
Managing bull elephants in captive environments has long posed challenges to mahouts, caregivers, and keepers worldwide due to behavioral and hormonal difficulties. Scientists are just starting to understand the extent of bull elephant behavior truly and, with it, how to go about safely managing them in captive environments.
This ongoing research aims to bring improved ’ safety and higher welfare standards for elephants through improved management practices in facilities practicing unprotected contact in Asia.
This study is being conducted in collaboration with local and international partners to ensure the best interests of local experts and community members are upheld during the project.
